Marie-Henri Beyle aka Stendhal is a French writer. From 1800 to 1801, he served in Italian campaign and was appointed second lieutenant. When the First Empire fell in 1814, he left for Italy and settled in Milan. He returned to Paris in 1824 and published his first novel, "Armance" in 1827, followed in 1830 by "The Red and the Black", partly influenced by the 1830 Revolution. After completing his last romantic masterpiece "The Charterhouse of Parma", in 1839, he began to write his novel "Lamiel", which remained unfinished. Stendhal dies at the age of 59.
