Between 1717 and 1723, he composed the Suites for solo cello, the Brandenburg Concertos, the first volume of Das wohltemperirte Clavier, the Sonatas and Partitas for solo violin and the Orchestral Suites. Bach also composed a few cantatas to celebrate special events at the court. In 1723, Bach was appointed cantor and music director at the Thomaskirche in Leipzig. The mastery of his contrapuntal skills was illustrated in the Musical Offering written for Frederick the Great of Prussia. The body of work of Johann Sebastian Bach is the most impressive in the history of classical music. He laid the foundation to the music of Mozart and Beethoven.
