William Edward Burghardt Du Bois was born on February 23rd, 1868 in Great Barrington Massachusetts. He attended Fisk University and earned a Master's Degree and a Ph.D. from Harvard University. Du Bois was a renaissance man; he was a journalist, a historian, an editor, and scholar. However, his activism is a central element of his legacy. Du Bois founded the Niagara Movement, a protest group for Black scholars. In 1909, he was among the founders of the NAACP. His opposition to Booker T. Washington's Atlanta Compromise and his fight for full and equal rights for African Americans brought him national recognition. He died on August 27, 1963.
