Medical researchers are using stem cells as a way to treat type 1 diabetes by helping the body generate new insulin-making cells. In 2017, California-based company ViaCyte started clinical trials of the PEC-Direct device. This credit card-sized implant contains insulin-producing cells that are derived from stell cells.
