Some define nihilism as a youth movement while others as a revolutionary impulse. It was also a remarkably Russian response to the conditions of Tsarist reform and repression. The word nihilism derives from the Latin nihil, meaning "nothing." The Russian Nihilist Movement started in the 1860s. It rejected all authorities. They were known throughout Europe as proponents of the use of violence to bring about political change after the assassination of Tsar Alexander II in 1881.
