Armand Jean du Plessis was a French clergyman and statesman and was the 1st Duke of Richelieu and Fronsac, hence commonly referred to as Cardinal de Richelieu. He served as the chief minister to King Louis XIII of France from 1624 to 1642. Richelieu vowed "to make the royal power supreme in France and France supreme in Europe." which enabled King Louis XIII to establish Absolute Monarchy in France during his reign. As both a churchman and a statesman, Richelieu was the pillar of France's greatness in the 17th century. He was also a great contributor to the secularization of foreign politics during the Thirty Years' War.
