The electric eel (Electrophorus electricus) is a South American electric fish which can generate an electrical charge of up to 600 volts to attack their prey and keep predators away. Although, human deaths due to electrical current attacks from these species are rare, multiple shocks can cause respiratory or heart failure. This 6-8 feet long freshwater predator has about 6,000 specialized cells called electrocytes which act like small batteries by storing power. It is a nocturnal creature that lives in the muddy and dark waters.
