In law, the writ of Habeas Corpus is a Court order through which a person can report any unlawful detention or imprisonment. The term carries a literal meaning - 'to produce the body'. In other words, the phrase, which is a command, means 'you must have the detainee's body brought to the court before us for the purpose of subjecting the case for further examination'. The writ, therefore, demands that the custodian must present the imprisoned person before the law court and show a valid reason for his or her detention. The court will decide whether the detention is lawful. It is one of the most important defences available against tyranny.
