Jean-Baptiste Colbert, a French politician, served as the Comtroller-General of Finances of France from 1661-1683 under the rule of King Louis XIV, carried out a program for economic reconstruction, thus helping France to become the dominant power in Europe. He was responsible for developing the domestic economy by raising tariffs and encouraging new public projects. He was the major figure to ensure that the French East India company had access to foreign markets so that they do not run out of coffee, cotton, sugar, pepper, fur, etc. Colbert also founded the French merchant marine. He also held almost all of the major offices of the State.
