The femur or the thigh bone is the upper bone of hindleg in tetrapod (four-limbed) vertebrates. In humans, it is the only bone in the thigh and the longest and strongest bone of the body, extending from the hip to the knee. The femur can be divided into three parts - proximal, shaft and distal. Its neck connects the shaft and the head at an angle of 125°, which is efficient for walking. A ball-and-socket-joint situated in the head of the femur is attached to the hip and held in place by a ligament. The human femur bone can resist forces of about 800-1,100 kg. It supports the body’s weight during activities like running, jumping or standing.
