The Arabian camel, also known as the dromedary, is a one-humped riding camel - unlike the two-humped Bactrian. It is the tallest among the three species of camels - Dromedary, Bactrian and Wild Bactrian, and makes up 94% of the world’s total camel population. It is widely distributed in the deserts of North Africa, Arabia, and the Middle East and a feral population is found in Australia as well. They have horny pads on the chest and knees which protect it from the intense hot sands when they lie down. While the wild dromedary is extinct, the domestic dromedary population is about 15 million. They prefer a long dry and a short rainy season.
