Being herbivorous mammals, elephants eat almost anything that’s vegetarian ranging from leaves, twigs, bushes, roots, bark, fruits and flowers. Being large animals, it is obvious that they need to eat large amounts of food. Tree bark is their favorite food. However, they do not have a very efficient digestive system; they digest only about 40% of what they consume. On average, elephants eat about 149-169 kg of food and drink 68.4-98.8 liters daily. They spend about 80% of the day eating. They would eat mostly in the early mornings and in the late evenings. They also dig up the earth with their tusks to obtain nutrients like salt and minerals.
