The black caiman is the largest member of the alligator family and the prodigious predator in the Amazon River basin. They can reach lengths of more than 14 ft and weigh over 1000 lbs. It is found in shallow, freshwater habitats such as slow-moving rivers, streams and lakes, and strays into flooded savannah and wetlands. Their black scales not only helps with heat absorption but also acts as camouflage when they’re in dark water.
