Spread across 40,000 sq km. in India & Bangladesh, the Sundarbans is the largest mangrove forests in the world, located in the delta shaped by the conflux of Ganges, Brahmaputra and Meghna Rivers in the Bay of Bengal. Intersected by a composite nexus of tidal waterways, mudflats and small islands of salt-tolerant mangrove forests, the Sundarbans presents a marvelous example of incessant ecological processes. Designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1997, it is known for its wide range of fauna, including 260 bird species, the royal Bengal tiger and other endangered species such as the Indian python & the estuarine crocodile.
