Commonly known as the Big Ben, the Clock Tower of the Palace of Westminster - was officially named Saint Stephen's Tower until 2012. It was renamed Elizabeth Tower on the occasion of Queen Elizabeth II’s Diamond Jubilee, celebrating 60 years on the British throne. Big Ben, the tower clock is renowned for its accuracy and for its massive bell. Strictly speaking, the name “Big Ben” refers to only the great hour bell, which weighs 15.1 tons. Big Ben chimed for the 1st time on 11th July 1859. The bell’s strikes were internationally broadcasted for the 1st time in 1932, during King George V’s Christmas broadcast on the Empire Service.
