The English royal charter created the Hudson's Bay Company (HBC) in 1670. The company's initial purpose was to trade furs into the Hudson Bay. The company eventually acquired rights to a large part of today's Canada, and Charles Bayly was its first overseas governor. Bayly established a system of ports around the bay perimeter from which traders would venture to buy furs from native peoples and ship them back to England. Traders ventured further west and settled inland trading posts. In 1821 the Hudson Bay Company merged with North West Company. The vast territory was surrendered to the new confederation of Canada in 1870.
