On January 13, 1898, the newspaper L'Aurore published an open letter to President Felix Faure written by writer and journalist Emile Zola. In the letter, Zola expresses his outrage over the Dreyfus Affair. He outlined everything that led to Dreyfus' first court martial and condemnation and how the army covered up their mistake while keeping an innocent man in horrendous living conditions in the penal colony of Cayenne. Zola went as far as naming army staff such as Du Paty de Clam, Gonse, and Henry. Following the letter's publication, Zola would end up being tried and convicted for criminal libel. To avoid going to jail, he fled to England.
