Judith Butler is a philosopher and gender theorist, known for her work on the performative nature of gender and sex, queer theory, and philosophical feminism (Duignan 2022). Her most famous work is Gender Trouble: Feminism and the Subversion of Identity (1990), through which she proposed that gender is socially constructed and largely the result of socialization, rather than an innate aspect of human identity (Duignan 2022). It was within this text that Butler made her assertion that gender is created through performative speech, that is speech that has the power to do something, and by replaying the performance of gendered traits.
