In medieval Japan, Buddhist monks would often be accompanied by chigo's, young males between 12 and 19. Similar to acolytes, chigo's were tasked to serve their masters and participate in religious ceremonies. Interestingly, and perhaps disturbingly, their duties were also sexual. As monks often had sex with the feminine looking, long haired, boys. Despite our general aversion to these kinds of relationships today, it was commonly accepted and sometimes revered to have sex with chigo's, as young children were considered closer to God. Even becoming god-like beings through rituals, making sex with a chigo a religious experience for monks.
