In the 1830s, many reforms from Lower and Upper Canada believed that the path toward full democracy was moving too slowly. Some thought Canada should try to join the United States and others thought Canada should adopt American republican values. In 1837-38, armed rebellions occurred in Toronto and outside Montreal, but the British troops and Canadian volunteers defeated the rebels. A number of the insurgents who were captured got while others were exiled. Some exiles later returned to Canada.
