Written by Leslie Feinburg and released in 1993, Stone Butch Blues is a semi-autobiographical book, centered around Jess Goldburg a Jewish girl from a working class family struggling with her gender identity. Set in the 1940s, it follows her as she deals with the ostracization from parents and peers who can’t seem to wrap their hands around her wanting to present as a ‘he-she’. Though, it also tells a tale of the complex intertwinings between religion, class, race, and gender. Hence, the praise it received for being one of the first stories to advance the notion of trans liberation. Consequently, winning it the Stonewall Book Award.
