Abraham Lincoln (1809 - 1865) occupies a special place in the history of the United States. From the log cabin of his childhood to his assassination, his rise is the epitome of the American dream. This autodidact became a lawyer by his merit. He entered politics at 23 and was elected President in 1860. Lincoln led the Civil War, proclaimed the abolition of slavery, and saved the country's unity. He was assassinated on April 14, 1865, a few days after the war's end. Depressive in his personal life but optimistic in his political action, the 16th President of the United States remains in the memory of his compatriots, a mythological figure.
