Air on G String is the second movement of Bach's Orchestral Suite no. 3 in D. It was composed between 1717 and 1723 in honor of Prince Leopold of Anhalt. The title was given to an arrangement for violin and piano by the German violinist August Wilhemj in 1871. Wilhemj changed the key into C major and transposed the melody down an octave so that it can be played exclusively on the G string of the violin.
