The Grandidier’s baobab grows only in the parched tropical forest of western Madagascar and the local people call them Renala (mother of the forest). Out of 8 baobab species in the world, 6 are native to Madagascar; 1 other species are found in Africa and another in Australia. The Avenue of the Baobabs is a small group of trees seen along some 260 m long chunk of the road between Morondava & Belon’i Tsiribihina. In 2007 it was declared as the first protected natural monument in Madagascar.
