Cardinal Jules Mazarin, born Giulio Raimondo Mazzarino or Mazarini, was an Italian cardinal, diplomat and politician, who governed France from 1643 until his death. This French statesman was a successor of Richelieu, completing his work of establishing France’s supremacy among the European powers. He served as the chief minister to the kings of France: Louis XIII and Louis XIV. Being born as a papal subject at Pescina, near Rome, he began his career as a soldier and diplomat at the service of the Pope. His main task was to maintain royal authority established by Richelieu which he successfully carried out, functioning as a co-ruler of France.
