Johann Sebastian Bach, the famous German composer and musician, composed six suites for unaccompanied cello (a string instrument) between 1717-1723. Undoubtedly, they are some of the most emotionally intense pieces of the Baroque period. Each of the suites has six movements which acts as a musical conversation and are great Baroque dance types. The ‘Prelude’ or Suite No. 1 is played in G major, and mainly consists of arpeggiated or broken chords. This one is probably the best known movement from the entire set of suites and is heard till date on the television or in the films. It shows Bach’s genius as the harmony flows out note-by-note.
