Blooming cherry blossom trees are synonymous with the arrival of spring. The Cherry Blossom, also known as Sakura trees in Japanese is the unofficial National Flower of Japan. On March 27, 1912, the Mayor of Tokyo gave 3,000 Japanese cherry trees to Washington, D.C., to strengthen the growing friendship between the US & Japan. Hence, the National Cherry Blossom Festival is celebrated annually to commemorate this day. While the season of cherry blossom typically lasts about one month, from the blooming of the 1st to the last tree, every individual tree may only flower for about a week. Cherry blossom trees usually live for 30 - 40 years.
