Some critics have acknowledged Condorcet as the most forward-thinking of all the Enlightenment philosophers, mainly because of his views on women's right and slavery. The Marquis de Condorcet was pugnacious in the quest for truth and always prepared to undertake labor or confront danger on behalf of philanthropic plans which his fertile mind contrived and his kind heart inspired. He worked on the abolition of slavery and in 1781, he wrote the essay Réflexions sur l'esclavage des nègres (Essay on the Enslavement of Negros). In 1788, along with other French abolitionists, Condorcet founded an antislavery society.
