Remembered as a pioneer of the scientific study of sex, sexuality, and gender, Dr. Hirschfeld promoted the belief that gender and sexual variance were innate & challenged the view that those who do not conform to the gender binary had a pathological perversion. His goal was to reduce prejudice against the LGBT community & to reform the German criminal code regarding sexuality. He contributed to the founding of the first LGBT emancipation organization in 1897, the Scientific-Humanitarian Committee, & developed theories in the field (inversion theory, coining ‘transvestite’). He notably performed some of the first gender affirming surgeries.
