Born in Steubenville, Ohio, in 1814, Edwin Stanton began his career as a lawyer. He worked on high-profile cases such as the reaper patent case, where he met Abraham Lincoln for the first time and was tried before the United States circuit court. As a fervent democrat, Stanton was Attorney-General under the James Buchanan presidency. Stanton was very critical of Lincoln's new administration when the Civil War broke out. He had no hope that Lincoln or anyone in the government could face the severe crisis. However, Lincoln called upon him to lead the war department due to his patriotism and determination to participate in preserving the Union.
