In October 1859, the abolitionist John Brown and a small abolitionist group planned to seize the federal arsenal at Harpers Ferry. They planned to secure weapons for the band of insurrectionist slaves they expected would flock to their side. The operation lasted 36 hours. The invaders killed four people and wounded nine. Of the 18 army men, ten were killed, and five, including John Brown, were taken prisoners. Brown was indicted and tried for treason against the state of Virginia a week later. He was convicted on November 2nd and hanged on December 2nd, 1859.
