The coffee cherries are picked when they're bright red. In flat landscapes, machinery can be used for harvesting. In mountainous areas, mechanical harvesting is not possible, so the ripe coffee cherries are handpicked. The cherries can be picked from a branch in two ways: 1) Selectively Picked: Only the ripe cherries are picked. 2) Strip Picked: All the cherries are stripped from the branch at once. In most coffee-growing countries, harvesting happens once or twice a year.
