Born on June 27, 1880 in Tuscumbia, Alabama, Helen Adams Keller was the first deaf-blind person to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree. When she was just 19 months old in 1882, she contracted an illness—called "brain fever" by the family doctor—that produced a high body temperature which left her both blind and deaf. On March 5, 1887, Keller was introduced to 20 years old Anne Sullivan, herself a visually impaired & a former student of Perkins Institute for the Blind, which was then located in South Boston. It was the beginning of a 49-year-long relationship during which Anne Sullivan evolved into Keller's governess and eventually her companion.
