Identity politics was coined in 1974 by Barbara Smith & the Combahee River Collective. The term describes an approach to justice based in identity, which recognizes the different experiences of different identities and advocates solutions to fit the needs of identity groups. While it can be well-intentioned, identity politics can also be harmful in that its generalization of experiences of identity groups according to the dominant view, & in its standardization of white, cis, male identities. This fails to enact justice for, or even to recognize/affirm, those whose needs or beliefs do not match with that generalized to them based on identity.
