Imam Muhsin Hendricks is an Islamic religious leader and scholar from Cape Town, South Africa. He is notably the first openly gay imam in the world, and is today one among only a small handful. Due to his sexuality, his perspectives on Islam are often dismissed by other religious leaders, despite his credibility to laypeople navigating between religion and sexuality or gender identity. His independent research focuses on this intersection, of Islam and gender/sexual diversity, and he has contributed to this field through papers and workshops, as well as by being in conversation with queer and transgender Islamic people.
