Born in New York City to an Orthodox Polish-Jewish immigrant family on 28 October 1914, Jonas Salk was the man who managed to first beat Polio. In the first half of the 20th Century, many children were paralyzed and even killed by the dreaded polio virus. By the 1950s, cases of polio infection had leaped to tens of thousands per year, which was put to an end overnight when in 1955 Jonas Salk’s polio vaccine was declared safe for general use.
