In his 2003 work Transgendered: Theology, Ministry, and Communities of Faith, Justin Tanis posits the notion of gender as a calling. Gender as a calling consists of a theological argument which holds that experiences of gender are invitations from God to engage with and perceive the world in new ways. If we understand gender as divine in this way, then whether gender is chosen or innate is not imperative - instead, gender expression in itself becomes intrinsically good, and thereby holy. Gender expression and experience as an ongoing religious practice affirms trans and non-binary people in both their self-expression and religious practice.
