With its crystal clear water and its unique wildlife, the Lake Baikal is often mistaken for a sea. Located in southern Siberia in Russia, it's the oldest freshwater lake in the world. It contains about 5,521 cubic miles of water (23,013 cubic kilometers), or approximately 20% of Earth's fresh surface water. In 1996, it was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
