Lorenzo de' Medici ruled the Republic of Florence from 1469 to 1492. During his reign, Lorenzo was more preoccupied with cultural and diplomatic issues than with business matters. Under the wing of Lorenzo, the painters Domenico Ghirlandaio, Sandro Botticelli, and Fra Filippo Lippi added beauty to the city of Florence. The poet Angelo Poliziano traveled long distances to search manuscripts to develop the Medici Libraries. The illustrious Platonic Academy regularly met at Lorenzo's palace for lively philosophic discussions. Lorenzo sponsored Michelangelo Buonarroti, Leonardo da Vinci, and Sandro Botticelli.
