Born in Delaware in October 1823, Mary Ann Shadd Cary was raised in a family dedicated to ending slavery and the education of blacks. She taught black children in New York, Pennsylvania and Delaware. In 1850 she and her brother Isaac emigrated to Canada in the hopes of better opportunities. Three years later, she founded the weekly newspaper The Provincial Freeman and became the first woman publisher in Canada. She lectured throughout Canada and widely in the northern US. When the Civil War broke out, she became a Recruiting Officer for the Union Army. She later moved to Washington and died in 1893.
