Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonarroti Simoni was born on March 6, 1475, in Caprese, Italy. He was a painter, a poet, an architect, and a sculptor. Early on, he enjoyed drawing what he saw and watching painters at the nearby churches. His childhood friend, Francesco Granacci, introduced him to the painter Domenico Ghirlandaio. At 13, he became an apprentice at Ghirlandaio's workshop. From 1489 to 1492, he moved into the palace of Lorenzo de' Medici, where he had access to the social elite of Florence. He was known to be arrogant with others and had a quick temper. He was a solitary and melancholic person. He died on February 18, 1564.
