The Nicobar Pigeon is a large pigeon found across a wide area from the small islands and the coastal regions of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, India, the Malay Archipelago, down to the Solomons and Palau. It measures about 40 cm in length and is the only living member of the ‘Caloenas’ genus. It is often regarded as the closest living relative of the extinct bird dodo. The Nicobar pigeon is a vocal species, producing low-pitched repetitive calls and regular beats. Its quick flight and an occasional sharp flick of the wings are characteristic of regular pigeons. Its short and white tail is prominent when seen from behind during its flight.
