Having other names like the forest giraffe or zebra giraffe, the okapi is an artiodactyl mammal (an artiodactyl is a hoofed animal having even toes). It is native to the northeastern region of the Democratic Republic of the Congo in Central Africa - mainly the rainforests of Congo. The buttocks, thighs, and the tops of its forelegs are horizontally striped with black and white. The striped markings on its body which are reminiscent of a zebra might make you think the okapi to be related to it, but the fact is okapis are closely related to giraffes. However, as compared to the latter, this beautiful animal has a shorter neck and shorter legs.
