On Violence, is written by the American philosopher and political theorist, Hannah Arendt. It was at initially an essay but later published in book form. Her goal was to discredit the positions of influential thinkers like Jean-Paul Sartre, who called for oppressed people to use violence. She believed that ‘power’ and ‘violence’ are two opposites. When power begins to shrink, people take on violence as a substitute. This dictum is true even today - forty-five years after the book’s publication. Arendt’s views on topics like totalitarianism and epistemology have left a lasting influence on political theory.
