Orientalism is a term coined by Edward Said in his publication of Orientalism in 1978 which discusses colonialism within the “Orient”, or non-Western nations and cultures (Mambrol, 2020). The colonial powers of Europe used the term “Oriental” to describe people of colour from the Global South and in doing so, effectively constructed a colonial-based perception of non-Western people and places (Mambrol, 2020). “Orientalism [is] a central pillar of European colonialism” (Wilcox, 2020, P.23). Furthermore, the use of the term “Oriental” by the West actively homogenizes the people of the “Orient” into a nondescript category and perpetuates racism.
