Created in 1999 by queer Chicana artist Alma López, Our Lady depicts the image of the Virgin of Guadalupe as a proud, strong Latina women, dressed in a digitized bikini of roses. The piece celebrates the Latina identity of the Virgin, who serves as a central figure in the Latin Americas both secularly and religiously. The story of the Virgin dates to 1531, in which she appeared to St. Juan Diego – twice in visions, and once through her image left in scattered roses. Through her art, López reframes the sacred story of the Virgin in terms of queerness through detailed re-associations with familiar and powerful symbols.
