The Humanism movement was born in the 14th century in Italy. Its basic tenets relied on human potential and the spread of human knowledge. Humanists referred to Greek, Latin, and Roman schools of thought. The philosophical systems derived from Platonism were used to teach social values and morality. They conceptualized and developed new civic guidelines dedicated to human progress. Great humanists include Francesco Petrarca, Pico della Mirandola, Giovanni Boccaccio.
