Descartes only trusted what was clearly seen to be beyond any doubt. For Descartes, mathematics has achieved the highest level of certainty that great thinkers long for hence mathematical reasoning should be used as a model for the progress of human reasoning. The certainty of mathematical knowledge produced a philosophical method that followed four rules: 1) Accept as the truth only a proposition that cannot be doubted. 2) Divide each problem into various manageable parts to solve it. 3) Order your thoughts from the simple to the complex. 4) Review frequently enough to retain the whole argument at once.
