Opened in 1832, the Rideau Canal is the oldest operated canal in North America. The historic waterway links a string of rivers and lakes. It stretches from the Kingston harbour on Lake Ontario to Ottawa and covers 202 Km. During wintertime, it's the world's longest skating rink. At its origins, the United States and Great Britain were trying to control what was then Upper Canada, and the canal had strategic military purposes. The canal was designed for steam-powered vessels and showed a wide range of 19th-century European technology. Today, the Rideau Canal is a National Historic Site of Canada and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
