In the 16th century, the Catholic Church was dominated by the fear of heretics spreading teachings that contradicted the Bible. Scientists who dared to form theories that the church thought heretical were persecuted. The Catholic Church was against the theory that the Earth revolved around the sun because the Holy Bible states that the earth was at the center. In the religion, the earth was created to be our home, but science radically changed our conception of the universe in terms of both time and space. For scientists, the reality was only what was measurable and what could be discerned through perceptions.
